This project is a translation of Nadirisms (Nadirizmen), a posthumous collection of Moyshe Nadir's "aphorisms, paradoxes, wordplay, and poetic prose" edited by the great Yiddish orator and declaimer Hertz Grosbard, and published in 1973, thirty years after Nadir's death. Nadir was, of course, a pseudonym, and his name best translates to "Joe Here-You-Go" (Moyshe being a paridgmatically ordinary Yiddish name). His name is at once a satyric homage to the "father of Yiddish literature" Sholem-Aleichem (Mr. How-Do-You-Do, as it were) and a dirty joke the content of which I leave to the reader to surmise. His work is marked by a kind of askance view at the ideological movements of his time, many of which he was strongly committed to if not totally "in shpan" (toeing the party line.) It it this satyric and suspicious perspective which I find so notable in our present in which, due perhaps to the catastrophes of the 20th century, a certain over-sincerity, quite contrary to Amerian-Jewish myth if nothing else, risks overtaking our view of Jewish life and thought.
